Phosporus helmed by Mark Emerson from UK in monohull category and Sayg I helmed by Andreas Hofmeier form Austria in multihull category are the winners of fourth Thousand Islands Race. Second leg with variable winds required a lot of patience in choosing the fastest course among more than thousand islands of Croatian Adriatic coast. Starting in Boka Bay was with light wind that lasted until the open sea where boats met ideal sailing conditions with Bura. In the middle of the second leg wind droped and varied so much that often boats within a mile of each other would experience entirely differnet conditions..

As expected first at the finish was Wilde Joe from Hungary after 40 h 55 min and 40 sec, faster then time of the first leg but still way slower from record set by Wild Joe of 302 h and 45 sec. However, looking at other boats's position at that time it was unlikely that Wild Joe would keep the lead in leg two under corrected time.

First, Italian Margherita helmed by Pietro Burell finished after 49 h 25 min and 46 sec that was enough to take over the lead for 9 min and 9 sec advantage under corrected time. After a bit more then two hours later, British Phosphorus by Mark Emerson crossed the line and took the lead under corrected time. Time was after that working in favor of Phosphorus that had onboard two croatian sailors Niki Keser and Hrvoje Petrović. It was quickly clear that other boats would not endanger Phosphorus position and with counting third place in first leg they were preparing celebration as overall winner.

Only boat that could have reached them was Czech Giulia with Jan Johan Hirnsal at helm. However, wind did nto help it happen and they finished only next morning. Nevertheless Giulia took fourth place in second leg that was enough for second overall. Third place was won by Macropus with Bojan Jančar with sixt place in each leg. Difference between third Macropus and sixth Sultan
is only two points that shows how competitive race was.

In multihull category two boats finished second leg. Austrian Sayg I with Andreas Hofmaier was better than geraman Lazy with Richard Mueller where in the first leg it was the other way round. With equal number of points Sayig I took the title as being better in the later race.

This year eddition of Thousand Islands Race showed how demanding and challenging could be on one of the most beautiful race courses for offshore races that nature can create. Race was followed via live tracking system on the web site several thousand funs. Finish in Rijeka harbour offered some interesting duels in which boats after sailing 279.5 miles were finishing with just with seconds difference of each other.

The first leg of this year’s Thousand Islands Race held among more than thousand islands of the Croatian coast was the slowest ever. At both the start in Rijeka and finish in the marina Porto Montenegro the Tivat winds were very weak. Nonetheless, boats finished in succession with no large gaps and in some cases after the 278,2 nautical mile leg, they were within a minute: this was the case for Lucia X, Sultan and 01 Express in the early morning of Wednesday.

The winner of the first leg in monohuls was the Czech entry Giulia helmed by Jan Johan Hirnsal, with second being Foxy with Igor Orlov from Slovenia and third was Phosporus from the UK helmed by Mark Emerson. The best among the multihuls was Lazy helmed by Richard Mueller.

First to cross the finish line was the fastest-rated boat in the fleet, the R/P 66 Wild Joe helmed by Marton Josza, who is also the current record holder on elapsed time for both legs. This time they made it in 49 H 35 M 53 S - with the record being 27 H 24 M 5 S achieved in the last race, this demonstrates how much slower Leg 1 was this time around.

And given the closeness of the other boats in the fleet at the finish it was obvious how difficult would be for Wild Joe to keep the lead in corrected time. Giulia took the lead on corrected time after 62 H 39 M 7 S of racing and won against Foxy by about 27 minutes. Phosphorus was among the leaders under corrected time during the whole race but had to be satisfied with third place at the end.

Strategicaly it the decision on which side to pass the island of Korčula was crucial. It seems that those who chose to pass to the south of Korčula were leading all the way in their categories, as they received a significant advantage over those passing between the island and the Pelješac peninsula. Being her third attempt, in this Lazy was third time lucky after all - in her two previous races she suffered a broken mast in the first and a loss of electricity in the second due to a stroke of lightning. So, her final arrival in Tivat on her third attempt was crowned by a great win.

Racing continues today with promotion racing named the «Thousand Islands + 2» event in Boka Bay. The start of the second leg from Tivat to Rijeka is at noon Thursday 22nd September.. Results ...
